WAILUKU — A 58-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were arrested in Kahului Thursday and later charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of a 36-year-old man whose remains were found wrapped in plastic Upcountry earlier this month, police said late Sunday night.

Bail for John Joseph Smith was set at $500,250 and bail for Stacy Marie Smith was set at $100,000, police records show. Both are from Makawao.

John Joseph Smith was also later charged with contempt of court, police records show.

The victim has been identified as Jonathan Awai of Makawao, police said.

The case that had been classified as an unattended death off Keanuhea Street in Kula has now been reclassified as a murder investigation by the Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Around 4:33 p.m. July 5, Wailuku patrol officers responded to a remote trail off of Keanuhea Street in Kula regarding the discovery of possible remains. Upon arrival, hunters led officers to what was later discovered to be the body of a 36-year-old man wrapped in plastic.

Detectives and crime scene technicians from CID arrived on the scene around 4:58 p.m. where an investigation was immediately launched to determine the cause of death, police said.

Police thanked the public for their patience “in allowing the information to be provided to the public in a way that has not jeopardized the integrity of the ongoing investigation.” Additional updates to the investigation will be provided as available.
